The Vancouver Food Co-op Featured in The Vancouver Voice!

Here's an intro and a link to a great article covering the Vancouver Food Co-op by the passionate word-smiths at our very own Vancouver Voice newspaper.

From the outside, 215 W 4th Street looks like an unassuming enough hole-in-the-wall in downtown Vancouver. The inside doesn’t look like much more: a small, sectioned-off warehouse that, close to the front, is adorned with aluminum shelves stocked mom-and-pop style with organic foods and household products, and a cooler packed with locally-grown produce. Yet as volunteers are compiling orders made online and being instructed in the steps to complete a given transaction, it seems clear that this humble start is about to grow into something more: a food cooperative for the farmers and consumers of Vancouver.

I'm a member of the Co-op....are you? A lifetime membership is only $180.00. Please consider joining and supporting local food, local agriculture and the option to shop in a grocery store that is influenced by its members, not by corporations.

Vancouver Food Co-op Looking For Board Members

If you're looking for an opportunity to contribute to local food security and the continued development of Vancouver's first food co-op, here's your big chance!

 From VFC President, Marj Caswell:

The VFC is asking for member-owners to step forward to serve on the board.  This is an exciting time for VFC--the online store means VFC has taken a major step forward in support of VFC's vision of access to healthy and sustainably produced foods, especially local.

Currently, we have four board members responsible for decisions ...and we need more of you involved!  Bylaws allow for nine positions.  We need more representation from VFC member-owners.  We need more voices in our discussions.  This means you.  We need you.  Please think about involvement, and email me at: marj@vancouverfood.coop with your questions and comments--or to let me know your interest.

Requirements?  VFC board members must be VFC member-owners, that's a given.  The other need is a strong desire for bringing healthy, organic food to our community.  The board meets on the first Wednesday every month, from 6:00 to 8:30 PM.  We try to handle business between meetings via email--so, board members need to have access to the Internet, and be willing to check in every couple of days, at least, and to be part of discussions and decisions.

Attention Vancouver Food Cooperative Shareholders!

Here's a little note I received from the folks at the VFC about the annual members' meeting this coming Sunday:

Vancouver Food Co-op Annual Member Meeting

The Co-op's annual member meeting will take place on Sunday March 29th - 6:00 - 8:00 pm at St. Lukes Episcopal Church at 426 E. Fourth Plain Blvd.

This event will be a Potluck of snacks, hors d'oeuvres, and finger foods. So, please bring a healthy snack or refreshment for everyone to enjoy!

This is a member meeting. Guests are welcome, although not able to vote, unless of course they join at the meeting.

PLEASE ATTEND THIS IMPORTANT MEETING. The Co-op continues to make progress towards opening a store. The Board wants and needs your input. Being a Co-op member means having a voice in setting Co-op policies, participating in important decisions, and helping make the Co-op successful. The Annual Meeting is one of many forums for you to play a role, meet people, and stay informed on our activities in the past year. We will also highlight the work of our Action Committees and their goals for the coming year.

AGENDA: Reports from the Board of Directors; Reports from Action Committees; Financial Reports; Voting on amendments to the Bylaws; Meet the Board candidates and a discussion about a potential site option.

Additionally, VFC was very recently presented with an interesting site option to consider and we would like to let you know a bit more about it at the meeting. We want to find out how you would like to be involved in the consideration of this potentially exciting option.

At this point, the board and some additional committee members are moving forward by evaluating what the new concept for the space could be, its likelihood of success, and how it aligns with our goals. Your support and involvement is key!

We welcome any comments or questions. Please email vancouverfood@vancouverfood.coop or call 694-8094 and a board member will get back to you.

We sent out a letter to all members with more detailed information as well as the restated bylaws and Articles of Incorporation, if you do not receive the letter by Monday please let us know and we can email you the info.

We look forward to seeing you on March 29th at 6:00 PM at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, 426 east Fourth Plain Boulevard, Vancouver--and remember to bring a snack or non-alcoholic beverage to share.
